Cyber Security for Industrial Control Systems and the Internet of Things

Course Description

The increasing use of information and communication technologies in industrial systems has lead to higher efficiency, reliability, and autonomy. However, they also introduce the possibility of cyber-attacks to systems that have not historically been susceptible to such risks. This course will introduce the participants to the fundamental issues related to industrial control systems (ICS) and Internet of Things (IoT) security. The objective of the course is to provide the participants with an understanding of how cyber-attacks are launched, why they may be successful, and mitigation strategies to defend against cyber-attacks. The course will present an introduction to information technology and control system architectures, security vulnerabilities, and mitigation strategies unique to the industrial control systems. The course will also provide technical instruction on the protection of industrial control systems using offensive and defensive methods.  

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, the participants will have an in-depth understanding of the different types of cyber-attacks on industrial control systems and the Internet-of-Things. Participants will also understand the vulnerabilities exploited by cyber-attacks, their impact on industrial systems, and will be exposed to strategies and tools for defending against cyber-attacks. 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

     ~ Better understand the cyber-threats faced by industrial control systems and their connection with information technology
     ~ Evaluate cyber risks of their systems and be able to draft and strategize a risk mitigation strategy

The course is targeted at professionals who work is directly or indirectly related to the control of industrial systems. These include professionals with roles as asset owners, vendors, integrators, and other third parties. Professionals with job functions related to information technology (including operational technology support), engineering, as well as corporate, industry, and professional standards will benefit from the course.
